Awhile ago, I was reading a post on one of the blogs I follow. The blog was talking about how, before trips, we pray for the safety of those traveling. For our soldiers overseas, we pray for their safe return. For events we may be attending, we pray for safety during the event. All of these, I've done numerous times. The author of the post, however, said that, while it is good to ask God for the things we want or feel we need, it is better to pray that we be drawn closer to Him. Instead of praying for safety, we should be open to whatever brings us closer to Him, whatever brings Him greater glory, even if that means an accident or injury.
I'd never thought of it like that before, and initially, my reaction was negative. "What is this guy talking about?" I thought. But through the course of the day, as his words ran through my head, I began to like what he was saying more and more.
Tonight, that post is echoed in this song, and by now, I'm convinced that praying for safety is the easy prayer- the one anyone can make. But the challenging prayer- the one that will change you if you're open to it- is the prayer to bring whatever might draw us closer to God.
But if that's what it takes to praise You
Jesus, bring the rain
