We got a light that's deep within us
No, don't keep it to yourself
When I hear this, I can’t help but think of the song “This little light of mine.” At the First Communion Mass - the 2nd graders sing that song right after Communion and before the final blessing. The thought being that they really have the light of Jesus shining through them (since receiving Communion). And now they are going to go out let that light shine - going all over, not letting it hide under a bushel, not letting the devil blow it out.
Recently, I’ve heard a lot about our manner after Church. We just received Jesus and we’re supposed to be these lights for the world - but immediately after Mass is done, so is our good behavior. THat’s not how it should be - that’s keeping the light of Jesus to ourselves, sometimes ignoring the light completely. I have to admit, sometimes I even get caught in the trap of letting down my guard immediately after leaving Church, sometimes even before leaving Church.
This Saturday, I get to go see an exhibit of 126 Eucharistic miracles from around the world. A little more than half-way through the exhibit, we’re going to stop to attend Mass. I pray that going to this exhibit will help me to realize what I’m actually receiving at Mass. I pray that this realization will help me to be better after Mass - be more like that light shining out to others.
