The boundaries stretchin' furtherThis line reminds me of when I hear, "That's how I was raised." It seems like this phrase is often used as an excuse to hold on to bigotry and hate. It seems like the ultimate cop out, and, sadly, one that is accepted as okay far too often. I think that we all come to a point where we have to decide for ourselves if we are going to believe what we grew up with, or whether there was something else that seemed right. Sometimes it is something different, and sometimes it is the same thing we grew up believing. But to resort to "That's how I was raised" is a response admitting to avoiding the question altogether.
Than his heart would choose to go
Perhaps worse than just avoiding the question, it let's us avoid the opportunity to grow. Sometimes that growth may be difficult or uncomfortable. Sometimes that growth may end up pulling us away from other people. But growth is always worth it. And when that growth stretches our hearts and allows us to love more than we were able to before, the reward is greater still.
