Chris' prayer: MercyMe's "I Can Only Imagine"

Such a beautiful song. It is easy to see why this was such a crossover and runaway success. The lyrics are simple, yet profound, the melody is catchy, and the song, in general, just evokes a lot of emotion. And for me, it is ruined.

It was pointed out to me by a music minister that this song is not theological correct for Catholics. That because we believe that Jesus is present in the Eucharist at Mass, we don't have to wonder what it will feel like when we meet Him, or stand before Him, or sing to Him.

And while I suppose my music minister friend is technically correct, I feel that analysis left a bit to be desired. The focus of the analysis was on the words, but the words aren't what this song is about. I thought that it was obvious that this song was about emotion, the emotion of a sinful man meeting the One who saved Him. This song does such an amazing job of describing that emotion, and it was all lost on my friend on a technical account. And unfortunately, it is all I can think about when I hear it.
