Chris' prayer: Jonathan and Stephen Cohen's "Friend of Mine"

Comfort us with Your love again
This song was written by the Cohen brothers to be sung at the memorial for those killed in the Columbine high school massacre. It is this line I find most curious.

Again? When had any of the students, teachers, employees, and administrators ever experienced anything like this before? When had they ever been subject to anything so heartbreaking and crushing as what occured that day? I cannot imagine any of them had ever experienced anything close.

And yet, here the Cohen brothers are asking to be comforted *again*. And what, at first seems to me to be a strange choice of wording, I find myself liking more and more.

The comforting they are asking for comes from the *same* love that they had experienced before in other hurts. The Love that cures all, that heals all, is the same no matter how big the hurt, how deep the pain, how bruised and broken. The God that cures my ills is the same God who helped the survivors through their tragedy.
