I'm ready to commend my lifeCommend. It's a word I say four times every day during night prayer. "Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. You have redeemed us, Lord God of truth. I commend my spirit. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit." And even though I say that word 28 times a week, I never gave the meaning of that word a second thought until I heard it in today's song, "I'm ready to commend my life. I'll follow through the darkest night." I thought, "commend? What's that word even really mean anyway?" So I looked it up!
I'll follow through the darkest night
Commend: to entrust; give in charge; deliver with confidence. Feudal Law. to place (oneself or one's land) under another's protection so as to become his vassal. What I didn't realize before is that every night what I'm saying is that I'm entrusting my spirit with God. I'm giving myself totally to God and asking for His protection throughout the night. And when I sing along to the song, I'm saying I'm ready to give my life totally to God, even when the night is dark, and it's really hard to see, and really hard to follow Him, I'm still going to do it.
Dear God,
I'm ready to commend my life. It's getting kinda dark and hard to see you. But I'm here. I'm here trying to follow you through this very dark night. Please lead me.
