Chris' prayer: Kirk Franklin's "Could've Been"

This song perplexes me. On the one hand, I love the beat. It's uptempo and fun. I also can appreciate the message that we should thank the Lord for what we do have, because things could certainly be worse. Oh, but on the other hand...

This song, in my opinion, gives the unintentional message that God does not favor the poor. That the poor and downtrodden are not loved by God, and it almost sounds like, in some way, they are beneath us. I feel like there is a right way to thank God for the gifts He gives us, but that Franklin misses the mark terribly here. Rather than focus on what He does give us in a positive way, here Franklin concentrates on what others are missing, doing so almost dismissively. It seems to represent what non-Christians think of Christians- a bit selfish, or self absorbed.

I think it is important to keep in mind what the outside world thinks of us. The Bible tells us that we are not to be of that world, and I understand that, but I feel like we need to be sensitive of what is going on around us and speak (or sing) accordingly. A lot of good will could be garnered if we would just stop sticking our feet in our mouths. As is usually the case, less talking and more action would be a good idea.
