I like the second verse of this song. Although we aren't under the rule of a pharaoh, as the Egyptians were in the first verse, there are things we do to ourselves and to our neighbors to enslave us, just like back in Egypt.
One such way that I am currently struggling with is setting my expectations too low, or compromising my ability for excellence. I am usually one to try to find comfort in any situation and, in doing so, often can set the bar too low for myself; such is the case currently with my job, and I am trying to change it.
When we set our expectations too low, we enslave ourselves to the idea that mediocrity is good enough, even though we were made with excellence in mind. We were made to achieve wonderful things! We were made to glorify God! Unfortunately, freedom, like working to achieve these great things, is a lot harder than settling for the slavery of mediocrity.
