Even though I don't deserve it all, You, You light my way
During this Lent, I have been attending an Apologetics Bible Study through Church. It’s been amazing. You think you know everything there is to know, but guess what, there’s always more to learn! I think the greatest thing about this Bible study, is that it was being taught by a former Evangelical Protestant. Someone who spent his life trying to convert those silly Catholics, but as he studied more, he realized that Catholicism was the truth. So he brought this really amazing perspective on Catholic ideas. He knows Protestants and their points really well, and he also knows way more about the Catholic faith than I could even hope to know. Tonight, the last one, ): he began by asking us three questions, three questions that Protestants ask to judge your faith.
-Are you saved?
-Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior?
-If you were standing at the pearly gates and St. Peter asked why you should be let into Heaven, what would you say?
Honestly, I never had anyone ask me these questions before, so I never really thought about the answers. But it really is something that we should be aware of, and something we should know the answers to, not just to satisfy the questioner, but also to help our own personal faith. The first half of the lyric above really says perfectly what I thought (before coming into the session) for the answer to the last question. You know, that whole “Lord, I am not worthy, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” My thought was, Lord (or I guess St. Peter in this case) I’m not really worthy to enter into Heaven, but I know I want to be there. After coming out of the session, I realize the second part of that lyric is the more important part. You, You light my way. It’s only by Jesus that we are worthy to enter into Heaven. (and btw, it’s the answer Protestants are looking for when they ask you that question).
Lord, I’m not worthy, not worthy to enter Heaven, not worthy of anything really cause I’m a huge sinner, but because You love me and because of all that Jesus did for me, have mercy on me. Amen.
