Purpose.
About a week ago, I finished reading Donald Miller's "Through Painted Deserts." In the book, Miller and a friend travel across the United States via a oft broken van. The book chronicles what happens to the two friends along the way as well as Miller's thoughts, both about the trip specifically as well as other, deeper thoughts running through his head. One thought that persists through the book is the need to ask "Why?" instead of asking "How?" This is a question that can be asked about many things, and to Miller, signifies a deeper longing. Once you stop asking how things happen and start asking why and what they mean, you've recognized that deeper longing.
This song, and the idea of God giving purpose to what would otherwise be described as simply chance, echoes those questions. The important question is not "How did we get here?" but "Why are we here?" What is our purpose? It's a question people spend their lifetime trying to figure out.
