Chris' prayer: Jars of Clay's "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows"

I am an eternal optimist. I always look for the upside of things, always seeking the good. I am a terrible judge of character because I give everyone the benefit of the doubt every time. I prefer to believe in the best in people and the best in situations. This lifestyle has its perks. I'm genuinely happy about 95% of the time. Rarely do I feel down. I laugh a lot. I joke around. I enjoy the presence of other people.

But sometimes, according to this song, looking at everything through rose-colored glasses, or in this case, looking through rose-colored stained glass windows isn't always a good idea. In this song we see a disconnect between what the subject in the song sees and what is really going on. The subject is intentionally not seeing what is there.

It seems like this would be a danger in being the optimist. In some ways, it can limit real, honest interaction between people. If I'm always the optimist, then I'll hesitate to share the despair I sometimes feel. If people see me as always being happy, perhaps they won't take me seriously when I'm not. It is a delicate balance that this song has helped me to understand more clearly.
