Megan's prayer: dc Talk's "Colored People"

We've gotta come together
Aren't we all human after all?

One of the first lessons I taught to my first grade was about diversity. We talked about how even though we all look different, we are all still American. It was very sweet to see first graders understanding this concept.

Yesterday, over a week after we talked about it, I overheard some of the students talking. They were talking about how some of them were better at drawing than other kids. One little girl said "It's okay though cause we are all good at different things. And, we are all American." I was so happy to see that something I taught stuck with them (at least for 8 days).

I think that as adults, sometimes we forget the one characteristic that unites us - our humanness. It is so easy to segregate people based on a variety of factors. It is so easy to say some people are better than others. But if we stepped back, we would realize we are all human. We are all God's children. We all deserve to be treated with respect.
