Chris' prayer: Plus One's "My Friend"

The other day, I was reading a thread on a forum I often visit. The thread starter was asking for opinions on what him and his girlfriend should do. He had just finished school and knew that his job would take him out of state. He loved this girl, and didn't really want to leave, and wondered if he should bide his time serving tables or tending bar while she finished up her schooling before starting a life together.

The advice on the forum was almost unanimous- the relationship should not tie him down. He should pursue his career and let whatever would happen to the relationship happen. Some suggested it would be best for the couple to break up, others suggested they give the long distance thing a try. But no one suggested he stay and wait for his love.

Five years ago, ten years ago, I would have agreed with this advice. It seemed like the best plan to get a good start on the career, and, as the saying goes, if it is true love, they will meet up again someday.

However, since that time, I believe I've come to know love a lot better, or at least I think so. If what this couple have is true love, then why on earth would they do anything at all to put on hold, to cast aside, saying, "I'll get to that when I'm ready." Love is something that should be embraced and cherished, and more than anything, I've learned that my decisions, in all areas of my life, should be born out of love. If I am not creating love with my decision, then it likely isn't the right one.

Today my advice would be different: pursue love at all costs.
