I love a good story. My friend Jen is the best at telling stories. She seems to have a story to go with every situation, which is probably the first step in being a good storyteller- have a story to tell. She's also amazing at building the story up, with subtle details adding interest as she goes along, until the story climaxes, usually hysterically, and always memorably.
That last part- always being memorable- is why Jesus loved to tell stories. He would teach his audience something difficult and abstract in a way that was simpler and memorable. The lesson was always learned by the end.
I've noticed that Casting Crowns has a tendency to do the same thing. They love to tell stories in their songs, with named characters and detailed plots that grow over the course of multiple verses. By the end, though, there's always a lesson learned.
